Apple Trained Its Own AI Model for China With Help From Alibaba

Apple has trained a large language model specifically for the Chinese market in partnership with Alibaba, according to sources close to the matter, marking a departure from its prior approach of leaning on third-party models to power AI features in the country.
The move would make Apple the first foreign company approved by Chinese regulators to offer a proprietary AI model within China, giving it more direct control over the AI experience in one of its largest and most competitive overseas markets. Rollout of the resulting AI features is expected in the coming months.
Apple's decision to build a China-specific model reflects the growing split between AI systems built for the Chinese market and those built for the rest of the world, as regulatory requirements and geopolitical pressure increasingly shape how global technology companies architect their products on a market-by-market basis, rather than shipping a single global AI stack.
