Stability AI publicly released Stable Diffusion, an open-source text-to-image model capable of generating photorealistic and artistic images from written prompts, making its weights freely downloadable rather than gating access behind a waitlist.
Unlike closed systems such as OpenAI's DALL-E 2 and Google's Imagen, Stable Diffusion could run on consumer-grade GPUs, letting developers, artists, and hobbyists fine-tune and deploy it on their own hardware within days of release. The open release quickly spawned a wave of community tools, plugins, and derivative models.
The move also intensified debate over generative AI and copyright, since the model had been trained on billions of images scraped from the web, including copyrighted artwork, without compensating the original creators. Artists' communities and some stock-image platforms began restricting AI-generated submissions in response.
