Apple Unveils M2 Chip, Powering the Redesigned MacBook Air

At its Worldwide Developers Conference keynote, Apple introduced the M2 chip, the successor to the M1 silicon that launched the company's transition away from Intel processors in 2020.

Apple said the M2 uses a second-generation 5-nanometer process and packs 20 billion transistors, offering up to 18% faster CPU performance and a significantly upgraded GPU compared to the M1.

The chip debuted inside a completely redesigned MacBook Air, which ditched the wedge-shaped chassis it had used for over a decade in favor of a flat, uniform design reminiscent of the MacBook Pro. The new Air added a MagSafe charging port, a larger display with a notch, and a four-speaker sound system, while starting at $1,199.

A refreshed 13-inch MacBook Pro also received the M2 upgrade, keeping its existing design.
