The Microsoft Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) program allows partners to manage licensing, Azure subscriptions, billing, and technical support directly for customers. Within the CSP program, Microsoft categorizes partners into two operational models: Direct Bill Partners and Indirect Resellers.
Direct Bill Partners
A Direct Bill partner purchases cloud services and licenses directly from Microsoft. To maintain Direct Bill status, partners must meet strict annual revenue thresholds, maintain advanced technical capabilities, and operate dedicated 24/7 technical support and billing infrastructure directly integrated with Microsoft.
Indirect Resellers
An Indirect Reseller works in partnership with a Microsoft-authorized Indirect Provider (a primary distributor). The distributor handles backend procurement, platform automation, credit lines, and escalated tier-2 support infrastructure. This allows the Indirect Reseller to focus heavily on advisory services, custom software solutions, and direct, personalized client support.
What This Means for Your Business
From a customer perspective, the practical difference is minimal because the day-to-day experience is virtually identical:
- Consolidated Billing: Under both models, you receive a single invoice from your CSP partner rather than dealing with separate Microsoft invoices.
- Full Service Access: Both Direct Bill partners and Indirect Resellers can provision Azure Plans, seat-based subscriptions via the New Commerce Experience (NCE), Azure Reservations, and Savings Plans.
- Bundled Support: Both partner types can bundle support into your billing arrangement so you do not need to buy a separate support plan directly from Microsoft.
Ultimately, a partner’s responsiveness, cloud expertise, and service quality matter far more to your business than whether they route backend transactions directly to Microsoft or through a distributor.
